Cisco ASR 9000 Line Card Bring-Up: Verify and Troubleshoot

Installing a line card in a Cisco ASR 9000 is only half the job — bringing the card up and proving it works takes a few deliberate steps. Per Cisco's official installation guide, every new line card starts administratively down, and the Port Status LEDs stay dark until you configure the interfaces and issue no shutdown. This article walks through the line card boot process, the LED indicators you should see, and the IOS XR troubleshooting path when a card does not come up correctly.

The Line Card Boot Process

During a typical boot, three events happen in sequence:

1. The line card receives power and begins executing its initialization software.
2. The card performs internal checks and prepares to accept the Cisco IOS XR software image from the Route Switch Processor (RSP).
3. The RSP loads the line card with its Cisco IOS XR software.

Verify the Line Card Installation

Check the LEDs to confirm the card is operating normally:

• Card Status LED — solid green means the card is operating normally.
• Port Status LED — green or blinking means the port is active. If the LED is off, verify that the associated interface has not been left in the shutdown state.

Remember: all new line cards are administratively down by default. Configure the interfaces and apply no shutdown to bring the ports up.

Troubleshooting a Failed Bring-Up

If the LED checks fail, move to Cisco IOS XR command-level troubleshooting:

• Check whether the RSP sees the card: show platform or show inventory.
• Verify the card's operational state with show hw-module and node administration commands.
• Check for error conditions on the card with show hw-module subslot errors (available in the ASR 9000 System Management Command Reference).
• Verify the transceiver modules after the card is up — a missing or faulty optic will keep the port down even when the card is healthy.
