GPON OLT to ONU Provisioning: Profile Configuration

Bringing a GPON subscriber online is a strictly ordered procedure: the OLT cannot register an ONU until the DBA, line and service profiles exist, and no traffic flows until a service-port binds the ONU to a VLAN. Skip a step and you get the most common field symptoms — the ONU shows as autofind forever, or it comes online but the customer has no internet. This runbook follows a real Huawei MA5600T/MA5800 deployment order and lists the verification command after each stage.

1. Confirm Boards Before Anything Else

Newly inserted GPON boards appear as autofind and must be confirmed before they become active. Do this on first install and after any card replacement.

Target state: every service board reports Normal or Active_normal. If a board stays in autofind 30 seconds after confirmation, re-run display board 0 and check the backplane seating.

2. VLANs, Uplink and Management IP

On MA5800 the uplink port is configured through the GIU interface (interface giu 0/8, then network-role 0 uplink) before VLANs are added to it.

The DBA profile sets upstream bandwidth, the line profile maps GEM ports to VLANs, and the service profile describes the customer-side ports. All three must exist and be referenced before an ONT can pass traffic.

4. Enable Auto-Find and Register the ONU

The service-port line is not optional — an ONU that shows Run state: online but has no service-port entry will still drop all subscriber traffic. After the service-port is created, confirm the ONU state and the traffic counters:

Troubleshooting the Usual Four Failures

  • ONU never appears in autofind: optical budget or splitter problem — check Rx/Tx power in display ont optical-info, and confirm auto-find is enabled on that exact port.
  • ONU online, no traffic: missing service-port, mismatched user-VLAN, or the uplink port does not carry the service VLAN.
  • Registration fails with a profile error: the referenced line/service profile ID does not exist or has unsaved changes (run commit inside the profile, then save).
  • Slow speeds for one subscriber: DBA profile max rate too low or shared T-CONT contention — verify the plan value against display dba-profile all.
