Before You Book: What to Have Ready

Booking a Broadcom-era VMware exam involves a chain of three systems — the Broadcom support portal, the CertMetrics certification dashboard and the Pearson VUE scheduling engine — each of which authenticates you separately. Having these items ready removes most of the friction:

  • A Broadcom support account that is linked to your certification profile. If your profile has never been used, expect to confirm your identity and address details before the certificate records appear.
  • Your CertMetrics profile, which is where exam history, badges and eligibility live.
  • A voucher or promo code, if you have one, ready to paste. Codes are case sensitive and are usually single use.
  • The exam code you intend to take, not just the certification name. The catalogue lists each version separately, and picking the older version because it is first in the list is an easy mistake.
  • Identification that matches your profile. The name on the ID you bring to the test centre must match the name on the booking — this is the single most common reason candidates are turned away.

Decide in advance whether you are testing at a centre or online, because the two paths ask different questions and demand different preparation of your environment.

Understanding the VMware Certification Paths

VMware certification is now run by Broadcom, and the current generation of exams is centred on VMware Cloud Foundation. The practical consequence for scheduling is that most exams carry a 2V0-xx.25-style code and exist in more than one revision, because a new revision is released when the product version changes.

Two things are worth checking on the exam page before you book:

  • The level. The catalogue is split into professional-level and advanced-level exams, and the page you need depends on the certification you are pursuing. You can also search directly by exam code.
  • The current revision. Taking a retiring revision is possible while it remains available, but it maps to a different certification record. Where your goal is the certification covered on this site, book the current revision — for example the VCP-VCF exams discussed in our posts on passing the VCP-VCF Administrator exam and passing the VCP-VCF Architect exam.

Recent 2V0 exams follow a similar format: 60 items, an appointment allowance of about 135 minutes, and a scaled passing score of 300. That format rewards breadth over depth, so if you are still studying, plan the booking date against your readiness rather than against the calendar.

In Person or Online Proctored?

The choice affects how much you have to prepare beyond the exam content itself. The in-person path is the one shown in the walkthrough above, and it is the safer option for a first certification attempt.

Consideration Test centre Online proctored
Environment Provided; quiet room and supplied workstation Yours, and it must meet the proctor's rules
Hardware risk Minimal Webcam, microphone and a stable connection are mandatory
Notes and scratch pad Locker for personal items, on-screen tools during the exam Desk must be completely clear; recorded session
Interruptions None Household, pets or a delivery can invalidate a session
Availability Depends on the nearest centre and its opening hours Wider slots, including evenings
Conference exams Requires the private access code for the on-site lab Not applicable

The practical rule: if you have a reliable room and a wired connection, online proctoring is convenient. If either is doubtful, book a centre. A invalidated online session costs you the fee and the time.

Paying Less: Vouchers, VMUG Advantage and Conferences

Exam pricing at list is significant, and the discount channels are stable enough to plan around:

  • VMUG Advantage. Membership includes a substantial discount on exam vouchers, historically 50% off, plus access to evaluation licences that are useful for the home lab you will need anyway. Our notes on VMware home lab licensing and home lab tokens explain how the lab side fits together.
  • VMware Explore. Attendees can receive a full discount code for an exam, which effectively makes the certification part of the conference cost.
  • VMUG Connect and local VMUG events. Full or partial discounts depending on membership status — the details are listed in the voucher section of the walkthrough above.
  • Employer training budgets. Where a certification is part of a job requirement, ask whether the training budget covers the voucher, and whether an exam retake package is available. Bundles that include a retake are usually better value than paying twice.

Voucher codes normally expire, so apply them at checkout rather than saving them for later. If a code is rejected, check the expiry date, the exam revision it was issued for and whether it has already been consumed.

Rescheduling, Cancelling and Retakes

Plans change, and the cost of changing a booked appointment depends on how much notice you give. Pearson VUE's standard expectation is that you reschedule or cancel before your appointment — commonly at least 24 hours in advance — and the certification programme may charge a reschedule fee. Late cancellations and no-shows typically forfeit the fee.

The operational advice is simple:

  • Reschedule through the same scheduling link you used to book, not by starting a new booking. Creating a second appointment does not cancel the first.
  • Keep the confirmation email. It contains the appointment number you need for any change or dispute.
  • If you fail, check the certification programme's retake waiting period before rebooking; the score report states your result but not the waiting rule, which lives in the programme policy.

Exam Day: Test Centre Checklist

  • Arrive early — 15 to 30 minutes ahead of the appointment, because check-in involves identity verification and a photograph.
  • Bring two forms of identification if the programme asks for them, at least one with a photograph and signature, and make sure the name matches the booking exactly.
  • Leave notes, phones and smart watches in the locker. Almost everything outside the exam room stays outside.
  • Expect an NDA or policy acknowledgement screen before the first question; it is part of the exam clock's preamble, not the exam itself.
  • Use the on-screen markup tools rather than trying to memorise everything; most candidates flag uncertain questions and return to them.
  • Collect the printed score report at the desk if the centre provides one, and note the score. It also confirms which certification record the result will update.

After You Pass: Badges, Renewal and Next Steps

Results feed into the CertMetrics dashboard, usually within a few days, and the digital badge is issued from there. From that point the certification is subject to the programme's renewal or recertification rules, which change between generations of the programme — check the current policy on the certification page rather than relying on a blog post, including this one.

If you are working through the VCF-era path, the natural sequence is administrator first, then architect, with the lab you already built doing double duty as revision material. Both of our write-ups on the actual exams — VCP-VCF Administrator and VCP-VCF Architect — cover what the study actually looked like. If your lab does not yet have a management layer, start with installing vCenter and build outwards.

Common Booking Problems

Problem Cause What to do
SSO button loops back to the support portal Session or cookie conflict between Broadcom and CertMetrics Sign out of both, clear cookies, or use a private window
Exam not found in the list Wrong level category, or searching by certification name instead of exam code Search by the exact 2V0-xx.xx code
Voucher rejected at checkout Expired, single-use already consumed, or issued for a different exam revision Check the issuing email and the exam revision it named
No appointments near you Centre capacity, or the date filter is too narrow Use "explore more times", widen the date range or switch to online proctoring
Booking blocked on name or ID Profile name does not match your identification Update the profile before booking, not on exam day
Conference exam not visible Private access code not entered, or entered with the wrong case Re-enter the code from the conference instructions

That’s all it takes to book a VMware exam. Good luck with your exam!
