Dell OS10 Factory Reset & Default Gateway Recovery

A Dell SmartFabric OS10 switch keeps its running configuration in memory and its startup configuration on flash, and a factory reset means deleting the startup file so the next boot loads defaults - not simply rebooting. Engineers who skip the backup step lose VLAN and STP databases with no way back, and engineers who forget the management default route end up with a switch that is up but unreachable from anywhere except the console. This runbook covers both halves of the job in the order they should be performed.

Step 1: capture everything you will need afterwards

The reset erases the running and startup configuration. Before touching anything, save the outputs you cannot reconstruct cheaply:

OS10# show running-configuration | no-more
OS10# show version
OS10# show vlan
OS10# show spanning-tree
OS10# show interface status
OS10# show ip route

Note the hostname, the management interface address and mask, the default gateway, VLAN-to-port assignments, spanning-tree mode and the firmware version. Devices with a default gateway configured as a static route need that route recorded explicitly, because it is the single setting most often forgotten during a rebuild.

Step 2: reset to factory defaults

The documented method is to delete the startup configuration and reload:

OS10# delete startup-configuration
Proceed to delete startup-configuration [confirm yes/no(default)]: yes
OS10# reload

On OS10 the deletion removes the configuration file but leaves the switch in its current operational state until the reload completes. Supplementary methods exist - deleting the configuration files from the filesystem, or using the ONIE uninstall environment to wipe the switch completely - but they are only needed when the startup file is corrupt or when a licence or admin password must be cleared as well. The plain delete startup-configuration path is the one that matches Dell's KB and behaves predictably.

What is cleared and what is not

  • Cleared: hostname, VLANs, IP addressing, spanning-tree settings, port channels, ACLs, users other than the default, and any saved startup file.
  • Not cleared: installed firmware image, licence files, and the ONIE environment.
  • Recreated automatically: the default admin account, the management interface with DHCP enabled, and the default VLAN 1.

Step 3: regain management access

After the reload the switch boots with the management interface set to negotiate an address by DHCP. If there is no DHCP server on the management segment, attach the console cable, or plug a laptop into the management port and use the fallback address, then set addressing explicitly:

OS10# configure terminal
OS10(config)# interface mgmt 1/1/1
OS10(config-if-ma-1/1/1)# no ip address dhcp
OS10(config-if-ma-1/1/1)# ip address 10.10.10.60/24
OS10(config-if-ma-1/1/1)# no shutdown
OS10(config-if-ma-1/1/1)# exit

Restore the default gateway or management route

OS10 does not have a Cisco-style ip default-gateway command that behaves identically for both routed and management traffic. Two options exist, and choosing the wrong one is why some resets end with a switch that answers on the local subnet but cannot be reached from another subnet:

Requirement Configuration
Switch is L2 only, management traffic must reach other subnets Configure a management route pointing at the gateway in the management VRF
Switch performs routing and needs a default route for the default VRF Configure a static default route in the default VRF
! global default route (default VRF)
OS10(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0/0 10.10.10.1

! management route, when the mgmt interface is in a separate VRF
OS10(config)# management route 0.0.0.0/0 10.10.10.1

Both commands are accepted without error, so the check is operational rather than syntactic:

OS10# show ip route
OS10# show ip route vrf management
OS10# ping 10.10.10.1
OS10# ping vrf management 8.8.8.8

The full range of management-plane addressing options, including the OOB interface and VRF details, is covered in our OS10 default gateway and management route configuration article and in the OOB management interface and VRF guide.

Step 4: rebuild, verify, save

Re-apply the baseline in a fixed order so that dependencies exist when they are referenced: hostname and management addressing, then VLANs, then port configuration, then uplinks and port channels, then spanning-tree and edge features. Save only after verification, because copy running-configuration startup-configuration is what makes the state survive the next reboot.

OS10# configure terminal
OS10(config)# hostname ACCESS-01
OS10(config)# vlan 10
OS10(config-vlan-10)# name USERS
OS10(config-vlan-10)# exit
OS10(config)# interface range ethernet 1/1/1-1/1/24
OS10(config-if-range)# switchport mode access
OS10(config-if-range)# switchport access vlan 10
OS10(config-if-range)# exit
OS10(config)# end
OS10# copy running-configuration startup-configuration
OS10# show running-configuration

If the reset was performed because the previous configuration was unusable, the terminal-based method and the intermediate recovery options are summarised in our OS10 factory reset methods and management setup note, and VLT peers that also need a clean rebuild are covered in the VLT troubleshooting article. A Chinese-language version of this workflow is available as Dell OS10 恢复出厂设置与默认网关重新配置.
