Dell OS10 Quick Start: S5212F-ON Port Groups and OS

This guide expands that quick-start thread into a complete day-one build sheet for the Dell PowerSwitch S5212F-ON running Dell Networking OS10. It covers what the platform actually is, how to get an operating system onto a bare switch that shipped with ONIE only, how port groups reshape the front panel, which optics will link up and which will not, the verification commands that matter during acceptance testing, and how to make sure the configuration you just typed survives a reload. The commands below were exercised on OS10 Enterprise 10.5.x and remain valid across the 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6 trains unless a note says otherwise.

What the S5212F-ON Is and Where It Fits

The S5212F-ON is a 1RU, fixed-form-factor top-of-rack switch aimed at 25GbE server access with 100GbE uplinks. Twelve SFP28 cages run at 25GbE (or 10GbE, or 1GbE with the right port-group mode), and three QSFP28 cages run at 100GbE, 50GbE, 40GbE, or broken out into 25GbE or 10GbE lanes. That combination is why the box shows up so often in home labs and small data centres: it is one of the cheapest ways to get real 25GbE plus real 100GbE in a single rack unit, and it runs the same OS10 image as Dell's larger S-series.

Two things catch people out on day one. First, the switch ships from the factory with no network operating system at all — it boots into ONIE (Open Network Install Environment) and waits for you to install one. Second, the SFP28 cages are organised into port groups: a hardware grouping of four ports that must all operate in the same mode. You cannot run one 1G optic in a group while its neighbours run at 25G, which is the root cause of the classic "my 1G module stays dark" complaint.

Before You Start: Cables, Console and Entitlements

  • An RJ45-to-USB (or DB9-to-USB) console cable. The S5212F-ON console port is RJ45 and runs at 115200 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control.
  • A terminal program. minicom -D /dev/ttyUSB0 -b 115200 on Linux or macOS, or PuTTY / Tera Term on Windows.
  • A FAT32-formatted USB stick for the offline path, or working TFTP / FTP / HTTP(S) / SCP reachability from the management network for the remote path.
  • An OS10 image entitlement. OS10 Enterprise Edition images come from Dell Digital Locker (DDL); you need the service tag of the switch and the entitlement that was sold with it. Store the .bin file — the installer image is self-contained.
  • An SFP28 or QSFP28 optic that you know is Dell-qualified or demonstrably compatible, plus a loopback or a known-good peer, so that you can prove link-up during acceptance testing.

Log in to the console with the factory defaults (user admin, password admin) once OS10 is installed. On a completely bare device you will instead land at the ONIE prompt.

安装 OS10 / Installing OS10 with ONIE

ONIE:/ # mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb # fat32 U 盘挂载
ONIE:/ # ls /mnt/usb # 确认 PKGS_OS10_xxx.bin
OS10 login: admin

In practice the offline install looks like this. Boot the switch, interrupt the ONIE menu if you need to, and make sure the ONIE discovery process is not holding the configuration lock while you work:

ONIE:/ # onie-discovery-stop
ONIE:/ # fdisk -l # identify the USB partition, e.g. /dev/sdb1
ONIE:/ # mkdir /mnt/usb
ONIE:/ # mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb
ONIE:/ # cd /mnt/usb && ls
ONIE:/mnt/usb # onie-nos-install PKGS_OS10-Enterprise-10.5.6.0.139-installer-x86_64.bin

onie-nos-install is the supported entry point: it parses the image, writes both OS10 image slots, and reboots the switch into the newly installed NOS. If the switch already runs OS10 and you are simply moving between releases, do it from the OS10 CLI instead, which keeps the console session alive and lets you watch progress:

OS10# image install usb://PKGS_OS10-Enterprise-10.6.0.5.139-installer-x86_64.bin
OS10# show image status
OS10# show boot
OS10# boot system standby # queue the standby slot for the next reload
OS10# reload

OS10 keeps two image slots — active and standby — so an upgrade is a two-step operation: install, verify with show image status, point the next boot at the slot you want with boot system standby, and only then reload. If the new image fails to come up, you can still boot the old slot from ONIE or from the boot menu. After the switch is up, confirm what you are actually running before you touch any configuration:

OS10# show version
OS10# show image status
OS10# show inventory

端口组(Port Group)与光模块兼容 / Port Groups and Optics Compatibility

S5212F-ON 的 12 个 SFP28 口在硬件上是 3 组 4×25G 拆分,插 1G/10G 模块默认无法建链,需要把端口组改成 10G 模式:

OS10# show port-group
OS10# configure terminal
OS10(config)# port-group 1/1/2
OS10(conf-pg-1/1/2)# mode Eth 10g-4x
OS10(conf-pg-1/1/2)# end

改完后 1G/10G 模块即可工作,接口也更名为 1/1/6:1 形式(breakout),speed 命令支持 1000/10000/auto。

The important thing to understand is the scope of the change: a port group is all-or-nothing. Setting port-group 1/1/2 to 10g-4x changes ports 5, 6, 7 and 8 at the same time. The supported layouts on this platform are:

Port group Physical ports Supported breakout modes
port-group 1/1/1 1, 2, 3, 4 (SFP28) 25g-4x, 10g-4x
port-group 1/1/2 5, 6, 7, 8 (SFP28) 25g-4x, 10g-4x
port-group 1/1/3 9, 10, 11, 12 (SFP28) 25g-4x, 10g-4x
port-group 1/1/4 13 (QSFP28) 100g-1x, 50g-2x, 40g-1x, 25g-4x, 10g-4x
port-group 1/1/5 14 (QSFP28) 100g-1x, 50g-2x, 40g-1x, 25g-4x, 10g-4x
port-group 1/1/6 15 (QSFP28) 100g-1x, 50g-2x, 40g-1x, 25g-4x, 10g-4x

Once a group has been switched, the ports inside it are addressed exactly as before for the SFP28 cages (ethernet 1/1/1 through 1/1/12), while a broken-out QSFP28 cage exposes its four lanes as colon-suffixed sub-interfaces such as ethernet 1/1/13:1 through ethernet 1/1/13:4. That naming matters as soon as you start writing interface configuration, VLAN membership or port-channels: the parent interface is no longer configurable in the same way once it is broken out.

Because the whole group moves together, plan the layout before you push the command. A mixed rack of 1G management NICs, 10G storage NICs and 25G compute NICs on the same switch is fine — you just have to dedicate one port group to each speed class, rather than mixing speeds inside a group of four.

Optics are the other half of the link-up equation. Check what the switch sees before you spend time troubleshooting the far end:

OS10# show inventory media
OS10# show interface ethernet 1/1/6:1
OS10# show interface ethernet 1/1/6:1 transceiver
OS10# show interface ethernet 1/1/6:1 phy

show inventory media lists the media type, part number and qualification status of every optic the switch can see. If a module is present but reported as unsupported, OS10 will keep the port down no matter what you configure, and no amount of no shutdown will fix it. Practical rules that save hours:

  • 1G and 10G optics belong in a port group that has been set to 10g-4x, not in the default 25G mode.
  • A 10G SFP+ DAC will not train on a 25G-configured SFP28 port; a 25G SFP28 DAC will not train at 10G.
  • Where the optic and the port both support multiple rates, pin the interface explicitly with speed 1000, speed 10000 or speed 25000 instead of leaving it at auto.
  • 100G optics on the QSFP28 cages should be left at 100g-1x unless you are deliberately breaking them out; QSFP+ 40G modules need 40g-1x.
  • Forward error correction is negotiated per rate on these ports; if a 25G or 100G link comes up but shows errors, check the PHY and FEC settings before blaming the fibre.

常用检查命令 / Essential Verification Commands

OS10# show inventory # 整机与电源/风扇
OS10# show inventory media # 各端口光模块类型与合格状态
OS10# show interface ethernet 1/1/6:1

The three commands above are the minimum. For an acceptance test, add the following: they give you a full picture of hardware health, addressing, and whether anything is actually passing traffic.

OS10# show interface status # one line per port: speed, duplex, status
OS10# show interface ethernet 1/1/1-1/1/12 # detailed counters and error rates
OS10# show environment # temperature, fan and PSU health
OS10# show system # hostname, uptime, running image
OS10# show ip interface brief
OS10# show lldp neighbors
OS10# show mac address-table
OS10# show logging logfile | tail

Read the port status line carefully. down means the link is not established at layer 1 and the cause is almost always optics, port-group mode, or a bad cable. up but no traffic usually means a VLAN, spanning-tree or LACP mismatch further up the stack. Persistent CRC or input-error counters in show interface point at a dirty connector or a marginal optic rather than at configuration.

保存配置 / Saving the Configuration

OS10 重启后默认丢失运行配置,务必保存:

OS10# copy running-configuration startup-configuration

That is the whole story, but it is worth internalising why: every command you type lands in the running configuration, which lives in RAM. The startup configuration is what the switch reads at boot. Until you copy one to the other, a power cycle or an unplanned reset takes everything with it. The two equivalent forms are:

OS10# write memory
OS10# copy running-configuration startup-configuration
OS10# show startup-configuration | head
OS10# show running-configuration | head

If you want a safety net before a risky change, back the configuration up off-box first — you can then restore it without console access:

OS10# copy running-configuration tftp://10.0.0.50/s5212f-running.cfg
OS10# copy startup-configuration ftp://user:pass@10.0.0.50/s5212f-startup.cfg

On a factory-fresh switch, do not forget that management access is the first thing you should persist. Configure the management interface, add a management route, save, and only then move on to VLANs and port-channels — otherwise you may end up driving to the rack to fix a typo.

A Sensible Day-One Baseline

With the OS installed and the port groups set, the order that causes the fewest surprises is: identity, management reachability, persistence, then data-plane configuration.

OS10# configure terminal
OS10(config)# hostname tor-s5212f-01
OS10(config)# interface mgmt 1/1/1
OS10(conf-if-ma-1/1/1)# no ip address dhcp
OS10(conf-if-ma-1/1/1)# ip address 10.0.0.20/24
OS10(conf-if-ma-1/1/1)# exit
OS10(config)# management route 0.0.0.0/0 10.0.0.1
OS10(config)# username netadmin password <strong-password> role sysadmin
OS10(config)# ip ssh server enable
OS10(config)# end
OS10# write memory

Verify the management plane from a jump host with ping and ssh, not from the console, because that is the path you will actually depend on later. Once SSH is proven, the console cable goes back in the drawer and every subsequent change can be made remotely — including a transaction-based session, which is the safest way to stage multi-step changes on OS10.

Troubleshooting: The Five Problems You Will Actually Hit

  1. No link on a 1G or 10G optic. The SFP28 port is still in its 25G port-group mode. Set the whole group to 10g-4x and pin the interface speed.
  2. Port is up, no traffic passes. Check VLAN membership, the native/untagged VLAN on the peer, and whether LACP is expected but not configured. show interface status and show lldp neighbors answer most of these questions in seconds.
  3. Optic reported as unsupported. OS10 refuses to bring up unqualified modules on many platforms. Replace with a Dell-qualified part, and re-check show inventory media.
  4. Configuration vanished after a reboot. You never ran write memory or copy running-configuration startup-configuration.
  5. Management interface unreachable. The interface is still on DHCP, or the default gateway is missing — OS10 keeps management routes separately from the data-plane routing table, so a data-plane default route will not make the management interface reachable.

FAQ

Can I stack two S5212F-ON switches? No. OS10 does not support physical stacking. The equivalent is VLT, which pairs two switches into one logical unit.

Do I need an OS10 licence? The image comes from Dell Digital Locker with the entitlement tied to your switch. Some advanced features are licensed; basic L2/L3 switching, VLT and management are available in the standard Enterprise image.

Can I run SONiC instead? Yes — the same hardware accepts ONIE-installable SONiC images, and the install workflow starts out identically.

How do I get back to factory defaults? Delete the startup configuration and reload; OS10 also supports a full factory reset that wipes configuration files from the filesystem.
