Dell OS10 default interface: Reset Ports to Factory Default

Not every OS10 cleanup needs the full Linux-kernel factory wipe. When a single port has accumulated VLAN memberships, L3 addresses, LLDP profiles, OSPF priorities and flow-control settings from a previous role, the right tool is the per-interface reset command. This article covers default interface in Dell SmartFabric OS10: exactly what it removes, the one configuration that silently blocks it, how to reset a port range, and how to verify the interface really is back to its default state.

What the command removes

default interface clears all software settings on an Ethernet or Fibre Channel port: L2 membership, VLAN assignment, L3 addressing including secondary addresses, LAG membership, ACL bindings, LLDP profiles and protocol tuning. After the reset an Ethernet port is administratively enabled (no shutdown) and sits in the default VLAN, while a Fibre Channel port is returned to shutdown.

The VLT restriction that catches people out

The command does not remove references to the interface from other features such as VLT. If the port is configured as a VLT discovery interface, the reset fails until that reference is removed:

OS10(config)# vlt-domain 10
OS10(conf-vlt-10)# discovery-interface ethernet 1/1/1
OS10(conf-vlt-10)# exit
OS10(config)# default interface ethernet 1/1/1
Proceed to cleanup the interface config?

Remove the discovery-interface statement first, then re-run the reset. The same logic applies to any other feature that owns a reference to the port.

Resetting one port or a range

OS10(config)# default interface ethernet 1/1/2
OS10(config)# default interface range ethernet 1/1/10-1/1/16
OS10(config)# interface ethernet 1/1/2
OS10(conf-if-eth1/1/2)# show configuration

The confirmation prompt is your last chance to change your mind; answer it deliberately, not reflexively. A comma-separated list works as well as a range.

Verification

OS10# show running-configuration interface ethernet 1/1/2
OS10# show vlan
OS10# show interface port-channel summary
OS10# show lldp neighbors

A clean port shows only no shutdown and no switchport/default VLAN membership, with no addresses and no port-channel membership. If anything survives, an owning feature still references the port — VLT is the usual suspect.

Keep this command separate from a full factory reset in your runbooks: default interface is a surgical, service-affecting-on-one-port operation, while the OS10 factory reset (deleting startup.xml and the Redis dump) is a console-only, whole-switch operation.
