Dell OS10 Factory Reset and Default Gateway Configuration

Two tasks get confused on Dell PowerSwitch OS10 more than any others: getting the box back to a clean state, and giving it a working path off-subnet. They are related because a freshly reset switch has no gateway at all, and because the two available gateway commands behave very differently. This article walks the full sequence - backup, reset, out-of-band addressing, in-band addressing, verification.

Before You Touch Anything

Collect the running configuration and the licence and firmware inventory. A factory reset removes configuration; it does not give you a rollback.

OS10# show running-configuration
OS10# show version | head 20
OS10# show licence
OS10# copy running-configuration flash://backup-before-reset.cfg

Method 1 - Factory Reset From the CLI

The standard OS10 path deletes the startup configuration and reloads:

OS10# delete startup-configuration
Proceed to delete startup-configuration [confirm yes/no]: yes
OS10# reload
Proceed to reboot the system? [confirm yes/no]: yes

If the switch is in a chassis or fabric role where a clean database matters, add the full erase of the runtime state before reloading:

OS10# delete startup-configuration
OS10# erase all
OS10# reload

Warning: erase all is not a 'clear the config' command. On many platforms it also removes the OS itself and drops the switch to ONIE, so it only belongs in a deliberate re-image, not in a rehoming.

Method 2 - Reset to ONIE and Uninstall the OS

For selling, RMA or a full re-image, reboot into the boot menu and choose ONIE: Uninstall OS. This removes the network operating system entirely; the switch then sits in ONIE waiting for a fresh image. There is no configuration left to inspect afterwards, which is exactly why it is the right answer for a device leaving your control.

Resetting One Interface Instead of the Whole Switch

Very often the requirement is only to bring a port, not the system, back to defaults - for example after inheriting a switch with a stale port description, MTU or switchport mode. OS10 separates these two operations cleanly:

OS10# configure terminal
OS10(config)# default interface ethernet 1/1/5
OS10(config)# interface ethernet 1/1/5
OS10(conf-if-eth1/1/5)# no mtu
OS10(conf-if-eth1/1/5)# no switchport

The per-interface form is documented in the default interface port-reset guide; use it instead of a full reload whenever the scope of the problem is a port.

Step 3 - Addressing a Reset Switch

A factory-default OS10 switch answers on the serial console or on the dedicated management port with DHCP. The management interface is mgmt 1/1/1 and lives in the management VRF, which is the single most important fact for the next section.

OS10# configure terminal
OS10(config)# interface mgmt 1/1/1
OS10(conf-if-ma-1/1/1)# no ip address dhcp
OS10(conf-if-ma-1/1/1)# ip address 192.168.100.20/24
OS10(conf-if-ma-1/1/1)# no shutdown
OS10(conf-if-ma-1/1/1)# exit
OS10(config)# management route 0.0.0.0/0 192.168.100.254
OS10(config)# write memory

management route vs ip route - Know Which One You Need

Command VRF Use for
management route 0.0.0.0/0 X management Reaching the OOB mgmt port's next hop (SSH, NTP, syslog, TFTP)
ip route 0.0.0.0/0 X default Forwarding production traffic from SVIs and routed ports

Configuring only ip route on a switch managed in-band with a management-port default gateway is the classic mistake: the box is pingable from the LAN but cannot reach the NTP or syslog server on the far side of the management network, or vice versa.

In-Band Management Variant

OS10(config)# interface vlan 100
OS10(conf-if-vl-100)# ip address 10.10.100.20/24
OS10(conf-if-vl-100)# exit
OS10(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0/0 10.10.100.1
OS10(config)# write memory

When management and production are both in use, verify the management VRF's own reachability rather than assuming the default routing table covers it - VRF-aware management is covered in the OS10 VRF configuration and verification guide.

Verification Checklist After Either Path

OS10# show version
OS10# show running-configuration | grep -E "management route|ip route"
OS10# show ip route vrf management
OS10# show ip interface brief
OS10# show vlan
OS10# show interface mgmt 1/1/1
OS10# ping 8.8.8.8
OS10# show logging | last 30

Two checks people skip and then regret: confirm the management VRF has its own default route with show ip route vrf management, and confirm the switch can resolve and reach the NTP server before you walk away. An unsynchronised clock breaks log correlation during the next incident, and the next incident is usually caused by the same change that reset the switch.

Harden Immediately After a Reset

A reset switch has default credentials and no policy. Before returning it to service, at minimum: set a local admin password, disable Telnet and HTTP, enable SSHv2, restrict management access with an ACL or explicit source ranges, and point syslog and NTP somewhere real. Then save with write memory and confirm with show running-configuration that the changes are present in the saved configuration.
